Facebook first out the blocks in the Social Media Olympics 2012

Social media giants Facebook have unveiled their new London 2012 Olympics Facebook page where they have successfully combined existing Facebook pages of competing athletes, national teams, sports and the official Olympics profiles into one easy to navigate page. This allows users to like all of their favourite athlete’s pages in one handy place. With the Olympics around the corner it is giving many UK companies the chance to showcase their own brand and support the British Athletes at the Games.  It is without a doubt going to be the most broadcasted Olympics yet in terms of social media activity and social media marketers will be jumping at the chance to get in on the action.

While the athletes are in preparation to come in 1st place for their country, we marketers prepare for who is likely to be trending 1st place on Twitter. This will be driven by the growing numbers of athletes who are embracing social media by posting regular updates to their fans and, with any luck, their success stories along with eagerly anticipated gold medal photos.

Nearly double the numbers of people are following sport via social media this year, according to a report by digital sports agency Perform into sports consumption.  The report reveals 21% of fans consume sport via social networks in 2012, compared to 13% the year previous. More than one in three (35%) of those polled agree that they are more likely to have a positive opinion of brands that associate with sports they follow on social platforms. The report also found that four out of 10 social media fans agree that they are more likely to interact with offers and promotions from a brand which associates with the sports they follow on these websites.

Does this mean we will all be getting sporty this summer? Or will the impact of the Olympics be more of a false start? What do you think? On your marks, get set, GO!
